6 WAYS TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUNGER

6 WAYS TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUNGER

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were? ~Satchel Paige I will soon be 60 years old.  Is that old?  I just can’t seem to grasp it.  Do I look it?  I don’t think so but nobody my age thinks they look their age.  Certainly no one wants to look any older than they have to.  Here are a few things I have learned about looking and feeling younger that I wish I had known sooner. 1. Exercise. Many years ago I read an article in Reader’s Digest.  The author said that if there is really a fountain of youth it is exercise.  That stayed with me.  For awhile I was swimming in the mornings at Gold’s Gym and there were two men who swam at the same time.  One was an older gentleman who was obviously in the pool because it was about all he could do.  He mostly just stood or walked slowly in the water.  After all, he was old!  The other was very fit walked with a bounce, was cheerful, friendly and a fabulous swimmer. He was very appealing and not old. One day we were all in the hot tub after swimming.  Now that I could see them up close and we had a chance to visit I...
WHAT HAVE YOU NEVER THOUGHT OF BEFORE?

WHAT HAVE YOU NEVER THOUGHT OF BEFORE?

I try to make my driving time productive. Recently I listened to a CD set by Ron White titled “How to Develop the Mind of Einstein.” In the recording he quoted Eleanor Roosevelt, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” He also told a story about a time that Einstein was supposed to meet up with a friend at a certain time and place. The friend was concerned that he might be late for their appointed meeting. He said that he didn’t want Einstein wasting his time waiting for him. Einstein assured him that it would not be a waste of his time, that he cherished the time alone to think. Those two ideas caused me to consider, what do I think about when I have extra time? We all have times in our day that we can just think about whatever we want. What do you think about? Do you think about that person that offended you recently, or events that we have no control of? We do that because those ideas can fill our minds with very little effort. I suggest that we all could use that valuable time to think about ideas. I would also suggest that you set some time...
INEVITABILITY

INEVITABILITY

A wise man said,  “We should all be students of inevitability.”  Jim Rohn We are all on the road to somewhere and the destination is inevitable.  The trick is to know that the road we are on is taking us to the place we want to go!  I have in my desk drawer a few redwood tree cones.  Did you know that even though the redwood is the tallest and most majestic of trees  the cone is small, about the size of a thimble?  I keep these cones because they remind me of human potential. Like the cone we start small but have within us the power to be majestic.   What separates us from the redwood cone is that the cone is dependent on the conditions being just right where they fall in order to become a mighty redwood.  People, regardless of where they fall, can choose what they become.  Most redwood cones crumble in the ground without reaching their grand potential.  It’s inevitable. But why do so many people settle for so little when they can choose? “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”                     Viktor Frankl...
Jabari – 90 DAY CHALLENGER

Jabari – 90 DAY CHALLENGER

Continued growth in multiple areas of my life (fitness/health, family, finances, business). I have so much to work on & FitMania LFLC is one of the best tools I have to stay in check & stay on track. I use the lessons of the physical challenge as a rule & guide for success in the many other challenges I face in life. Goals have been set for my personal life that are huge & I know are attainable. I have made sure to focus on the time with my wife which is helping our relationship. (Not to busy trying to build for my family that I don’t spend time with them.) I’ve learned that there are people that I can rely on for advice & mentorship & I have the leadership qualities. I would love to have my kids ages 9& 7 involved in our fit world. Getting them involved early in a healthy lifestyle would do so much for them in their futures. Having them around such positive people would be huge benefits for their future...
Emily – 90 day Challenger

Emily – 90 day Challenger

WINNER: GRAND PRIZE FEMALE “It’s kind of expensive, and we’re already paying for a gym membership, remember?” “You mean to tell me you’re going to go to these workouts six days a week?” “What about easy days? You won’t make progress if you do high intensity every day.” I had just started attending classes at Fitmania the previous week when I sat down with my husband to pitch the idea of me entering the Fitmania 12 Week Challenge. My husband is supportive in my endeavors, but he is a realist about most things in life, and as you can see, he had some doubts. I, too, had some doubts initially. Would I be able to combine my demanding work at the hospital, raising my one and four year old girls, and have time and energy left for anything else? I didn’t know, but I have a stubborn personality – and truth be told, some extra baby weight that I hadn’t been able to get rid of in four years – so I took the leap and joined the challenge. As my alarm sounded for the first 5 a.m. class, I decided I would have to make friends with coffee if I were to continue doing this. During the first...

SHERRI – 90 DAY CHALLENGER

SHERRI – 90 DAY CHALLENGER

Before joining Fitmania my definition of a good exercise routine was walking the mall in the morning with the other older women.  Before this 90 day challenge my definition of healthy eating was trying to eat smaller portions and then getting so hungry I would eat all the chocolate chips from the freezer.  Now instead, I eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and meat with some dairy and for my treat I eat nuts.  I have not had  those extreme hunger pains because I am eating more frequently. The 90 day challenge has benefited my everyday life dramatically.  First, it has increased my stamina and energy.  This had made me a more effective as a teacher of a part time dance class, and as the new teacher of an early morning church class for teenagers.  Second, it has increased my confidence because my body size is more comfortable to me.  In fact I can fit into my wedding dress that I wore 38 years ago this month!  Third, to my surprise, it has increased my memory:  I have been able to learn the names of my students faster and my mind feels clearer. Fourth, I feel empowered because I have improved  my upper body and core strength and experience better...
EXCUSES AND THE STANDING LEG

EXCUSES AND THE STANDING LEG

“An excuse is worse and more terrible than a lie.”  – Alexander Pope Leaner, Fitter, Stronger, Cuter I have a few catch phrases I use when training at FitMania.  Both staff and clients may think I repeat these all the time because I am getting old and do not realize how often I say things, but I do it because I want those phrases to pop into my clients heads when they need them. One of the more fun phrases is, “Who wants to be leaner, fitter, stronger, cuter?” I spoke at a networking event recently.  These were people who came looking for ways to be successful in their businesses.  I asked the group how many would like to be “leaner, fitter, stronger, cuter”.  Every hand went up.  I asked how many thought that if they were “leaner, fitter, stronger, cuter” they would be more successful in their business.  Again every hand went up.  We then had a short but enthusiastic discussion on why that is true.  I thought I had them convinced until afterwards when I had person after person seek me out to explain to me why they were the exception. All of the excuses fell into one of three categories:  I am too busy. I don’t have the money. Something hurts. ...

EAT MORE – LOSE MORE

“To a significant degree, we are an overfed and undernourished nation digging an early grave with our teeth, and lacking the energy that could be ours.”  – Ezra Taft Benson Everyone knows, or at least suspects, that powders, pills and potions are not the secret to weight loss.  We also know that diets do not work in the long run and yet millions of dollars are spent looking for the magic formula for being lean and fit.  What if the magic formula is just food and plenty of it?  You have tried dieting, why not try eating to lose weight? Eating Enough Often Enough I had a woman wander into FitMania to see what we were about.  We were having a light conversation but she looked like she was about to cry.  We see plenty of tears around here but this time it seemed out of place.  Finally I asked if she was okay and she burst into full tears.  She said, “My trainer has me on a 1200 calorie diet and I am just so hungry!”  I know this particular trainer, and I know he knows better, but in our industry’s eagerness to get immediate results too many are prescribing diets that only work in the short run. Just like the rest...
Six Reasons I Am Not Against GMO’s

Six Reasons I Am Not Against GMO’s

Nothing is to be feared.   It is only to be understood. – Marie Curie My grandfather worked at a hydro-electric dam near Tremonton, Utah. People didn’t understand how it worked. They accused the power company of taking the electricity out of the water and damaging the food the farmers were growing.  It was hysteria born of ignorance.  When my dad told me that story I thought of the biotech crops and the GMO (genetically modified foods, also known as GM) hysteria.  It is with our passions as it is with fire and water; they are good servants, but bad masters. -Roger L’ Estrange I was visiting with a few FitMania clients after class this week and I mentioned I was a debater in high school.  After they feigned shock and we all had a giggle I explained that I learned in debate that you can find an “expert” or a “study” to prove anything.  I am sure in my grandfather’s day there was an “expert” and a “study” that proved the crops were being adversely affected by the water leaving hydro-electric plants.  When I was debating many of my favorite pieces of evidence could be used whether I was arguing pro or con on the topic, depending on the way...
13 WAYS TO BE HAPPY(ER)

13 WAYS TO BE HAPPY(ER)

There was a poster in my daughter’s high school English class that said, “We do what we do because of what we value most at the time”.  Sometimes we value ease at the expense of true happiness. Many of our choices make us feel good in the short term but actually damage our happiness in the long run. For example, we might feel like we would be happier if we skipped our workout, watched TV and ate ice cream. For a few minutes of pleasure (which is usually less pleasure than we thought it would be) we trade self-respect, some more unwanted weight and a belly ache. Look around you and you will find that the happiest people are the ones who know how to delay immediate gratification for a greater and lasting happiness. No one, at the end of the day, says, “I sure wish I wouldn’t have exercised today!” but how often do we regret skipping a workout?  How many times have we regretted some unscheduled self-indulgence in food, time or money? “Indeed, man wishes to be happy even when he so lives as to make happiness impossible.”                                                ...
EAT YOUR PROTEIN

EAT YOUR PROTEIN

“All of us are self-made, but only the successful are willing to admit it.”  -Earl Nightingale As I counsel with people and their eating habits one of the most surprising things I have learned is that most people are not getting enough protein. Especially people who are very active, gaining muscle and/or are trying to lose weight.  Let me see if I can convince you to step it up.  CONVINCER #1 Protein has a higher thermogenic effect than carbohydrates or fat.  That means that more calories are required to digest protein and that can actually increase your metabolism.  While fat has the thermogenic effect of 0-3%, carbohydrates of 5 -10% protein has 20-30%.  That means if you eat a 300 calories of  protein 75 – 80 calories will be spent digesting it. CONVINCER #2 Protein digests slower.  No matter how great your  carbohydrates are they will still go to fat faster than protein. CONVINCER #3 Protein is a muscle builder.  Without adequate protein you will not maximize the benefits of your muscle building workouts.  One of the major benefits of muscle is that muscle also boosts metabolism. CONVINCER #4 Protein is more satisfying.  Advertisers like to point to studies where people with a high fiber breakfast eat less at the next meal. ...
CHOCOLATE BOOSTS HEALTH, LOVE AND WEIGHT LOSS

CHOCOLATE BOOSTS HEALTH, LOVE AND WEIGHT LOSS...

“Chocolate is not cheating!  After a salty meal you need a little sweet.  This is living not cheating.”  Ali Landry I eat chocolate.  I eat a lot of chocolate.  If chocolate alone caused weight gain I would have a problem!! In fact all of the trainers at FitMania eat chocolate.  Chocolate is like a mascot around here.  I actually encourage my clients to eat chocolate, even when they want to lose weight. The trick is to eat the right kind.  The darker the chocolate the better.  If it isn’t dark then it is just chocolate flavored sugar. Here are a few reasons chocolate can help with weight loss and weight stabilization: It curbs your appetite.  Try a little in the late afternoon and see if you do not eat less the rest of the day. It satisfies cravings.  Have a piece of two when you are having a food craving and the cravings disappear. It can satisfy a sweet tooth.  Have some right after a meal and you will not be tempted by dessert.  Make sure you take a little when you go out to lunch or dinner with friends. It is also a health food.  Check out these health benefits of chocolate: • Lowers Blood Pressure. Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., director of the...
HOW TALL WILL A TREE GROW?

HOW TALL WILL A TREE GROW?

The Riddle Is: How tall will a tree grow? The answer: As tall as it can. Why do some people make things happen in their lives while others let life happen to them?  That is the real riddle! I am driving to FitMania at 5:30 this morning. There are several inches of snow already on the ground and it is still snowing. There is almost no one out and I wonder who will show up to the gym today. Since I am listening to a seminar by Jim Rohn while I drive, and he is discussing personal philosophy, I reflect on why today some people’s personal philosophy will be to keep their commitments, including their workout, and the next will be to stay home. Jim Rohn calls these kinds of questions “mysteries of the mind”. It’s a riddle I can’t solve. What I do know is that the person who doesn’t let obstacles stand in the way of their greater goals is the one who will “grow tall”. Two great skills that you can learn in the gym that carry over into all of life are: 1. How to show up. It is consistency that leads to progress. There are always excuses to not show up; the trick is to find...
